That could soon change thanks to a hybrid cell that can harvest energy from both sunlight and raindrops.<\/p>\n<p>The key part of the system is a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nanogenerator#Triboelectric_nanogenerator\">triboelectric nanogenerator<\/a> or TENG, a device which creates electric charge from the friction of two materials rubbing together, as with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Static_electricity\">static electricity<\/a> \u2013 it\u2019s all about the shifting of electrons.<\/p>\n<p>TENGs can draw power from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-car-tyre-nanogenerators-can-convert-road-friction-into-useable-energy\">car tyres hitting the road<\/a>, clothing materials rubbing up against each other, or in this case the rolling motion of raindrops across a solar panel.
