What can go wrong? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/technology\/darpa-unveils-awesome-design-its-new-vertical-takeoff-plane\/\">Vertical take-off plane<\/a>? Well, why not? Bioengineered spy plants? Wait, what?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency \u2013 DARPA \u2013 the part of the US Department of Defense responsible for developing technologies to be used by the military, is planning to bioengineer plants for intelligence gathering.<\/p>\n<p>DARPA says its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.darpa.mil\/news-events\/2017-11-17\">new program<\/a> \u201cenvisions plants as discreet, self-sustaining sensors capable of reporting via remotely monitored, programmed responses to environmental stimuli.\u201d Because that doesn\u2019t sound terrifying at all.
