We need to focus on finding an answer, says molecular biologist Oliver Medvedik.<\/p>\n<p>If given the option, would you choose to live forever? Many of us would say \u201cyes,\u201d but with one major caveat: just as long we don\u2019t age. In scientific terms, aging means \u201ca progressive loss of fitness in an organism over time,\u201d says molecular biologist and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/participate\/ted-fellows-program\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> TED Fellow<\/a> Oliver Medvedik. What causes this loss of fitness in humans is multifaceted, although scientists are exploring different theories including \u2014 and these are just a few of the many avenues of research \u2014 the deterioration of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/elizabeth_blackburn_the_science_of_cells_that_never_get_old\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health of our telomeres<\/a> (the ends of our chromosomes), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/molecular-cell\/pdf\/S1097-2765(16)00081-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">changes in cell mitochondria<\/a>, inefficient clearance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2888802\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">damaged cell proteins<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4964536\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">senescence of stem cells<\/a>, leading to chronic inflammation and a depletion of stem cells.<\/p>\n<p><b>Although it causes a loss of fitness and health, aging is not seen as a disease.<\/b> \u201cThe FDA defines a disease as something that afflicts only a segment of the population. But aging affects everyone,\u201d says Medvedik, the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.ted.com\/diy-biohack-fellows-friday-with-oliver-medvedik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">co-founder of Genspace<\/a>, a citizen science biotech lab, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/cooper.edu\/academics\/people\/oliver-medvedik\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">professor of bioengineering<\/a> at the Cooper Union in New York City.
