But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/600711\/the-tiny-startup-racing-google-to-build-a-quantum-computing-chip\/\" target=\"_blank\">as we\u2019ve reported in the past<\/a>, the firm is working on a complex chip architecture that promises to scale up well, and should be particularly suited to applications like machine learning and chemistry simulations. That\u2019s why we made it one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/lists\/companies\/2017\/#rigetti-computing\" target=\"_blank\">our 50 Smartest Companies of 2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/s\/607887\/ibm-nudges-ahead-in-the-race-for-quantum-supremacy\/\" target=\"_blank\">IBM<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2017-07-17\/google-s-quantum-computing-push-opens-new-front-in-cloud-battle\" target=\"_blank\">Google<\/a>, part of Rigetti\u2019s business model has always been to develop a kind of quantum-powered cloud service that would allow people to make use of its technology remotely.
