Experiments in mice suggest that the nutrient helps tell out-of-control cells to stop dividing and die.<\/p>\n<p>Some blood cancers, including acute and chronic leukaemia, often involve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg22129533-100-giant-leaps-of-evolution-make-cancer-cells-deadly\/\">mutations<\/a> affecting a gene called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg22530094-600-mutation-order-reveals-what-cancer-will-do-next\/\"><em>TET2<\/em><\/a>. This gene usually helps ensure that a type of stem cell matures properly to make white blood cells, and then eventually dies. But when <em>TET2<\/em> mutates, these cells can start dividing uncontrollably, leading to cancer.
