{"id":71952,"date":"2017-08-16T12:42:32","date_gmt":"2017-08-16T19:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/made-in-space-announces-completion-of-3d-printed-radiation-shields-project"},"modified":"2017-08-25T09:51:30","modified_gmt":"2017-08-25T16:51:30","slug":"made-in-space-announces-completion-of-3d-printed-radiation-shields-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2017\/08\/made-in-space-announces-completion-of-3d-printed-radiation-shields-project","title":{"rendered":"Made In Space announces completion of 3D printed radiation shields project"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/made-in-space-announces-completion-of-3d-printed-radiation-shields-project.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/madeinspace.us\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Made In Space<\/strong><\/a> has announced the completion of its three-part project focused on the additive manufacturing of radiation shields it launched earlier this summer, and tested them aboard the <strong>International Space Station<\/strong> (ISS).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tctmagazine.com\/3D-printing-news\/nasa-radiation-shields-bigelow-expandable-activity-module\/\"><strong>TCT<\/strong> first reported the printing of the protective shields<\/a> which are being used on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>NASA\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> <strong>Bigelow Expandable Activity Module<\/strong> (BEAM) \u2013 connected to the ISS \u2013 in May. Made In Space (MIS) used its Additive Manufacturing Facility to produce the shields, which grew in thickness as the testing phase went on. The first was made at 1.1mm thick, the second at 3.3mm and the third at 10mm, all in ABS plastic.<\/p>\n<p>The shields include within them channels which hold <strong>Radiation Enclosure Monitors<\/strong> (REM), sensors being used on the BEAM to test for radiation, recording the measurements.
