But the environment we live in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/watch-the-science-of-genetic-inheritance-is-weirder-than-we-thought\">can make genetic changes<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers have now discovered that these kinds of environmental genetic changes can be passed down for a <a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/356\/6335\/320\">whopping 14 generations<\/a> in an animal \u2013 the largest span ever observed in a creature, in this case being a dynasty of <em>C. elegans<\/em> nematodes (roundworms).<\/p>\n<p>To study how long the environment can leave a mark on genetic expression, a team led by scientists from the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) in Spain took genetically engineered nematode worms that carry a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transgene\">transgene<\/a> for a fluorescent protein.
