This protective mechanism is called an excited state proton transfer, and it is the focus of <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/anie.201700239\/abstract?systemMessage=Pay+Per+View+on+Wiley+Online+Library+will+be+unavailable+on+Saturday+15th+April+from+12%3A00-09%3A00+EDT+for+essential+maintenance.++Apologies+for+the+inconvenience.\" target=\"_blank\">new research<\/a> by a team of scientists.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers used the <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.slac.stanford.edu\/sites\/lcls_public\/Pages\/Default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Linac Coherent Light Source<\/a> (LCLS) at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory to generate X-ray laser pulses capable of probing the nitrogen molecule \u2014 in the simple molecule 2-thiopyridone \u2014 for <em>quadrillionths<\/em> of a second. The short period of time matters because when molecules are exposed to this kind of light they react incredibly quickly.
