These NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts aren\u2019t guaranteed to go all the way, but are rather sort of low-risk, high potential reward moonshots \u2014 science fiction they hope will be more the former than the latter.<\/p>\n<p>The awards are a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2016\/04\/12\/nasa-selects-13-early-stage-high-concept-moonshots-for-100k-funding-each\/\">regular occurrence<\/a> and divided into Phase I and Phase II: Phase I projects are more or less in the concept stage and will get around $125,000 over 9 months to see if they\u2019re at all viable, essentially from \u201cmight work\u201d to \u201cshould work.\u201d Phase II projects get a more flexible amount, but as much as half a million dollars over 2 years, to see about going from \u201cshould work\u201d to \u201cworks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The full list of awards can be found <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/spacetech\/niac\/2017_Phase_I_Phase_II\">here<\/a>, but I\u2019ve selected a few I think are especially promising.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Link: <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/04\/06\/stellar-echoes-venusian-automatons-and-more-gain-nasa-moonshot-funding\/\">https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2017\/04\/06\/stellar-echoes-venusian-au...t-funding\/<\/a> --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NASA has announced the recipients of its most recent round of highly experimental projects it deems promising enough to fund.
