However, the number has dropped to eight in 2017 because new information shows that poverty in China and India is worse than previously thought, making the bottom 50% even worse off and widening the gap between rich and poor.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>The world\u2019s eight richest billionaires control the same wealth between them as the poorest half of the globe\u2019s population, according to a charity warning of an ever-increasing and dangerous concentration of wealth.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"http:\/\/policy-practice.oxfam.org.uk\/publications\/an-economy-for-the-99-its-time-to-build-a-human-economy-that-benefits-everyone-620170\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" class=\"\">report<\/a> published to coincide with the start of the week-long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/davos\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" class=\"\">World Economic Forum in Davos<\/a>, Switzerland, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/oxfam\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" class=\"\">Oxfam<\/a> said it was \u201cbeyond grotesque\u201d that a handful of rich men headed by the Microsoft founder Bill Gates are worth $426bn (\u00a3350bn), equivalent to the wealth of 3.6 billion people.<\/p>\n<p>The development charity called for a new economic model to reverse an inequality trend that it said helped to explain Brexit and Donald Trump\u2019s victory in the US presidential election.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Link: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2017\/jan\/16\/worlds-eight-richest-people-have-same-wealth-as-poorest-50\">https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development\/2017\/jan\/16\/w...poorest-50<\/a> --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last year, Oxfam said the world\u2019s 62 richest billionaires were as wealthy as half the world\u2019s population.
