{"id":33138,"date":"2017-01-04T01:47:57","date_gmt":"2017-01-04T09:47:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/germany-has-so-much-renewable-energy-that-people-are-being-paid-to-consume-electricity"},"modified":"2017-06-04T08:26:29","modified_gmt":"2017-06-04T15:26:29","slug":"germany-has-so-much-renewable-energy-that-people-are-being-paid-to-consume-electricity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/germany-has-so-much-renewable-energy-that-people-are-being-paid-to-consume-electricity","title":{"rendered":"Germany has so much renewable energy that people are being paid to consume electricity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/germany-has-so-much-renewable-energy-that-people-are-being-paid-to-consume-electricity.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Germany had so much <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/politics\/britain-one-of-the-lowest-producers-of-renewable-energy-in-the-eu-9219497.html\">renewable energy<\/a> last week that customers were briefly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/business\/news\/bank-of-england-poised-for-negative-interest-rates-if-it-becomes-appropriate-a6919956.html\">being paid<\/a> to consume electricity, it has been reported.<\/p>\n<p>As spotted by <em><a href=\"http:\/\/qz.com\/680661\/germany-had-so-much-renewable-energy-on-sunday-that-it-had-to-pay-people-to-use-electricity\/\" target=\"_blank\">Quartz<\/a><\/em>, who cite data from German think tank Agora Energiewende, fair weather and high winds on Sunday 8 May saw <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/environment\/wind-power-now-the-cheapest-source-of-electricity-but-the-government-continues-to-resist-onshore-a6685326.html\">wind<\/a>, solar and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/people\/berta-caceres-hondurian-environmental-activist-killed-in-own-home-over-opposition-to-hydroelectric-a6910786.html\">hydroelectric<\/a> power plants producing 54.6GW of power, roughly 80 per cent of the 68.4GW of power being consumed across the country at that time.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the price of power plummeted, and went negative from 7AM to 5PM, bottoming out at -\u20ac130 per MWh at 1PM. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/hundreds-of-renewable-energy-companies-could-be-forced-out-of-business-due-to-dramatic-subsidy-cuts-a6700466.html\">Energy providers<\/a> were essentially being paid by producers to take the electricity off their hands.<\/p>\n<p><!-- Link: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/environment\/renewable-energy-germany-negative-prices-electricity-wind-solar-a7024716.html?cmpid=facebook-post\">http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/environment\/renewable-energy-ge...ebook-post<\/a> --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Germany had so much renewable energy last week that customers were briefly being paid to consume electricity, it has been reported.
