The researchers engineered human kidney cells to act like pancreatic \u03b2 cells, namely to sense blood glucose levels and produce insulin accordingly (<i>Science<\/i> 2016, DOI: <a href=\"http:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1126\/science.aaf4006\" title=\"b-cell\u2013mimetic designer cells provide closed-loop glycemic control\">10.1126\/science.aaf4006<\/a>). When implanted in mice with type 1 diabetes, the cells prevent high blood glucose levels, also known as hyperglycemia.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, \u201call we offer diabetic patients to cope with their disease is to have them <a href=\"http:\/\/cen.acs.org\/articles\/94\/i13\/Graphene-patch-help-patients-manage.html\" title=\"Graphene patch could help patients manage diabetes\">measure their blood glucose levels<\/a> and then inject a hormone,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsse.ethz.ch\/department\/people\/detail-person.html?persid=88479\" title=\"Martin Fussenegger\">Martin Fussenegger<\/a> of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, who led the team that engineered the cells.
