This twist on a controversial idea could overturn our standard cosmological wisdom.<\/p>\n<p>In 1998, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imperial.ac.uk\/people\/j.magueijo\">Joao Magueijo<\/a> at Imperial College London, proposed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg17723814-800-hero-or-heretic\/\">the speed of light might vary<\/a>, to solve what cosmologists call the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg18524911-600-13-things-that-do-not-make-sense\/\">horizon problem<\/a>.
