The simple calculus of it all being (a) if intelligence is in part equivalent to detecting the environment (b) the environment is a computer simulation \u00a9 eventually nearly all intelligent lifeforms should discover that their environment is a computer simulation. I called this the Savvy Inevitability. In simple terms, if we\u2019re really in a Matrix, we\u2019re supposed to eventually figure that out.<\/p>\n<p>Silicon Valley, tech culture, and most nerds the world over are familiar with the real world version of the question are we living in a Matrix? The paper that\u2019s likely most frequently cited is Nick Bostrom\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.simulation-argument.com\/simulation.html\"><em>Are you living in a Computer Simulation?<\/em><\/a> Whether or not everyone agrees about certain simulation ideas, everyone does seem to have an opinion about them.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, the Internet heated up over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/the-question-elon-musk-refuses-to-talk-about-in-hot-tubs-2016-6\">Elon Musk\u2019s comments<\/a> at a Vox event on hot tub musings of the simulation hypothesis. Even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/gadgets-and-tech\/news\/bank-of-america-the-matrix-50-per-cent-virtual-reality-elon-musk-nick-bostrom-a7287471.html\">Bank of America<\/a> published an analysis of the simulation hypothesis, and, according to Tad Friend in an October 10, 2016 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2016\/10\/10\/sam-altmans-manifest-destiny\">article<\/a> published in New Yorker, \u201ctwo tech billionaires have gone so far as to secretly engage scientists to work on breaking us out of the simulation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- Link: <a href=\"http:\/\/ieet.org\/index.php\/IEET\/more\/Edge20161030\">http:\/\/ieet.org\/index.php\/IEET\/more\/Edge20161030<\/a> --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I argued in my 2015 paper \u201cWhy it matters that you realize you\u2019re in a Computer Simulation\u201d that if our universe is indeed a computer simulation, then that particular discovery should be commonplace among the intelligent lifeforms throughout the universe.
