{"id":31054,"date":"2016-10-14T23:47:33","date_gmt":"2016-10-15T06:47:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2016\/10\/diamonds-arent-forever-team-create-first-quantum-computer-bridge"},"modified":"2017-04-24T19:28:25","modified_gmt":"2017-04-25T02:28:25","slug":"diamonds-arent-forever-team-create-first-quantum-computer-bridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2016\/10\/diamonds-arent-forever-team-create-first-quantum-computer-bridge","title":{"rendered":"Diamonds aren\u2019t forever: Team create first quantum computer bridge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/diamonds-arent-forever-team-create-first-quantum-computer-bridge.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By forcefully embedding two silicon atoms in a diamond matrix, Sandia researchers have demonstrated for the first time on a single chip all the components needed to create a quantum bridge to link \u201cPeople have already built small quantum computers,\u201d says Sandia researcher Ryan Camacho. \u201cMaybe the first useful one won\u2019t be a single giant quantum computer but a connected cluster of small ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Distributing quantum information on a bridge, or network, could also enable novel forms of quantum sensing, since quantum correlations allow all the atoms in the network to behave as though they were one single atom.<\/p>\n<p>The joint work with Harvard University used a focused <a href=\"http:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/ion+beam\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">ion beam<\/a> implanter at Sandia\u2019s Ion Beam Laboratory designed for blasting single ions into precise locations on a diamond substrate. Sandia researchers Ed Bielejec, Jose Pacheco and Daniel Perry used implantation to replace one carbon atom of the diamond with the larger silicon atom, which causes the two <a href=\"http:\/\/phys.org\/tags\/carbon+atoms\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">carbon atoms<\/a> on either side of the silicon atom to feel crowded enough to flee.
