Although chemotherapy can put the disease into remission, it often recurs and the treatment\u2019s effectiveness tends to wane over time. As a result, ovarian cancer is the fifth most-common cause of cancer death in women.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, a team of researchers including Stanford oncologist <a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/profiles\/jonathan-berek\">Jonathan Berek<\/a>, MD, presented the results of an international, multi-center phase-3 clinical <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT01847274\">trial<\/a> of a new oral medication called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tesarobio.com\/niraparib\">niraparib<\/a> in 553 women with advanced, recurrent ovarian cancer at the annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esmo.org\/Conferences\/ESMO-2016-Congress\">meeting<\/a> of the European Society for Molecular Oncology in Copenhagen. Berek, the Laurie Kraus Lacob Professor and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/stanfordhealthcare.org\/medical-clinics\/womens-cancer-center.html\">Stanford Women\u2019s Cancer Center<\/a>, supervised Stanford\u2019s involvement in the trial.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of the study was to see whether niraparib could prolong the length of remission, also known as \u201cprogression-free survival,\u201d in the women when compared to treatment with a placebo. As Berek described the niraparib treatment for me in an phone call, \u201cThis is a daily oral treatment with relatively low toxicity.
