Eye and Ear 617\u2212573\u22123897 <a href=\"mailto:Suzanne_Day@meei.harvard.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Suzanne_Day@meei.harvard.edu<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>New findings may pave the way for the development of pharmaceutical therapies to reverse corneal scarring<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Boston, Mass. \u2014<\/strong> In cases of severe ocular trauma involving the cornea, wound healing occurs following intervention, but at the cost of opaque scar tissue formation and damaged vision. Recent research has shown that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) \u2014 which can differentiate into a variety of cells, including bone, cartilage, muscle and fat cells \u2014 are capable of returning clarity to scarred corneas; however, the mechanisms by which this happens remained a mystery \u2014 until now. In a study <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/stem-cell-reports\/fulltext\/S2213-6711(16)30187-4\">published online today<\/a> in <em>Stem Cell Reports<\/em>, researchers from Schepens Eye Research Institute of Massachusetts Eye and Ear have identified hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), secreted by MSCs, as the key factor responsible for promoting wound healing and reducing inflammation in preclinical models of corneal injury.
