{"id":30551,"date":"2016-09-27T10:48:38","date_gmt":"2016-09-27T17:48:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2016\/09\/nasa-just-detected-high-energy-x-rays-in-space-that-dont-come-from-any-known-source"},"modified":"2017-06-04T14:12:53","modified_gmt":"2017-06-04T21:12:53","slug":"nasa-just-detected-high-energy-x-rays-in-space-that-dont-come-from-any-known-source","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2016\/09\/nasa-just-detected-high-energy-x-rays-in-space-that-dont-come-from-any-known-source","title":{"rendered":"NASA just detected high-energy X-rays in space that don\u2019t come from any known source"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/nasa-just-detected-high-energy-x-rays-in-space-that-dont-come-from-any-known-source.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A NASA-funded study has solved a longstanding mystery over the origin of X-rays that permeate space in our Solar System, but in doing so, it\u2019s also discovered an entire group of high-energy X-rays that can\u2019t be explained.<\/p>\n<p>The research comes from a new analysis of data recorded by NASA\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/science.gsfc.nasa.gov\/astrophysics\/xray\/index.cfm?fuseAction=projects.view&navOrgCode=662&navTab=nav_about_us&project_id=371\">DXL rocket mission<\/a>, which took flight in 2012 to settle the question of what creates these low-energy X-ray emissions \u2013 called the <a href=\"http:\/\/imagine.gsfc.nasa.gov\/science\/objects\/diffuse_background2.html\">diffuse soft X-ray background<\/a> \u2013 in our corner of the galaxy.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, there were two central hypotheses. X-ray emissions were known to come from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/live-updates-nasa-is-announcing-what-happened-to-mars-atmosphere-right-now\">solar wind<\/a>, but scientists also thought they might originate from what\u2019s called the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Local_Bubble\">Local Hot Bubble<\/a> \u2013 a theorised region of hot gas that envelops our Solar System.
