Buried deep underneath the folds of the cerebral cortex, neural stem cells in the hippocampus continue to generate new neurons, inciting a struggle between new and old as the new attempts to gain a foothold in memory-forming center of the brain.<\/p>\n<p>In a study published online in <i>Neuron<\/i>, Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT in collaboration with an international team of scientists found they could bias the competition in favor of the newly generated <a href=\"http:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/neurons\/\" rel=\"tag\" class=\"\">neurons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe hippocampus allows us to form new memories of \u2018what, when and where\u2019 that help us navigate our lives,\u201d said HSCI Principal Faculty member and the study\u2019s corresponding author, Amar Sahay, PhD, \u201cand neurogenesis\u2014the generation of new neurons from stem cells\u2014is critical for keeping similar memories separate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- Link: <a href=\"http:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2016-09-memories-stronger-precise-aging.html\">http:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2016&#45;09-memories-stronger-precise-aging.html<\/a> --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When it comes to the billions of neurons in your brain, what you see at birth is what get\u2014except in the hippocampus.
