They take various forms: a map for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2016\/04\/27\/brain-dictionary-map-words\/\" target=\"_blank\">word concepts<\/a>, a map of individual cells\u2019 activity, a map based on the organ\u2019s physical contours.<\/p>\n<p>What they share in common is the aspiration to take the lumpy mass of the brain and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2016\/07\/20\/scientists-map-the-brains-shell-with-more-detail-than-ever-before\/\" target=\"_blank\">categorize it<\/a>, somehow, into useable areas \u2014 not unlike the textbook brain images with their colored denotations of \u201coccipital lobe\u201d and \u201cfrontal cortex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But these maps often come along with a problem: They may not sync up with the other maps.
