Using this \u201cinterscatter\u201d communications technology allows medical devices and implants with limited power sources to gain the ability to send data using low-power Wi-Fi signals to smartphones and smartwatches.<\/p>\n<p>The UW team previously described the <a href=\"http:\/\/abc.cs.washington.edu\/files\/comm153-liu.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">technique of \u201cbackscattering\u201d ambient RF signals<\/a> \u2014 repurposing existing RF signals in the environment \u2014 to enable device-to-device communication without the need for onboard power sources. Now, the team builds on that prior research to introduce \u201cinterscattering,\u201d the inter-technology, over-the-air conversion of Bluetooth signals to create Wi-Fi transmissions.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers <a href=\"http:\/\/interscatter.cs.washington.edu\/files\/interscatter.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">wrote in a paper<\/a> that novel medical devices, such as smart contact lenses and neural implants, currently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meddeviceonline.com\/doc\/eight-factors-to-consider-before-adding-m-to-m-capabilities-to-your-medical-device-0001\" target=\"_blank\">have power constraints<\/a> that limit their ability to generate Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or ZigBee transmissions to communicate with smartphones, watches, and tablets.
