Details of the team\u2019s discovery were just published in Nature.<\/p>\n<p>Rumors of a possible Earth-like exoplanet first surfaced on August 12 in the German weekly <em>Der Spiegel.<\/em> Citing an anonymous source with the La Silla Observatory research team, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/wissenschaft\/weltall\/astronomie-erdaehnlicher-planet-beim-nachbarstern-entdeckt-a-1107405.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the magazine claimed<\/a> the rumored planet \u201cis believed to be Earth-like and orbits at a distance to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Proxima_Centauri\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Proxima Centauri<\/a> that could allow it to have liquid water on its surface-an important requirement for the emergence of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now we know those rumors <a href=\"http:\/\/www.qmul.ac.uk\/media\/news\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">were true<\/a>: There is <a href=\"https:\/\/carnegiscience.edu\/news\/press-releases\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">clear evidence<\/a> for a planet orbiting Proxima Centauri, a small red dwarf star located just 4.25 light years away, slightly closer to Earth than the famous binary pair of Alpha Centauri A and B.
