In the United States alone, that\u2019s nearly 300,000 fatalities prevented over the course of a decade, and 1.5 million lives saved in a half-century. For context: Anti-smoking efforts <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2014\/01\/07\/anti-smoking-efforts-saved-lives\/4355227\/\" data-omni-click=\"r'article',r'link',r'4',r'496496'\">saved 8 million lives<\/a> in the United States over a 50-year period.<\/p>\n<p>The life-saving estimates for driverless cars are on par with the efficacy of modern vaccines, which save 42,000 lives for each U.S. birth cohort, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/preview\/mmwrhtml\/mm6019a5.htm\" data-omni-click=\"r'article',r'link',r'5',r'496496'\">according to<\/a> the Centers for Disease Control.<\/p>\n<p>Globally, there are about 1.2 million traffic fatalities annually, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/violence_injury_prevention\/road_safety_status\/2013\/en\/\" data-omni-click=\"r'article',r'link',r'6',r'496496'\">according to<\/a> the World Health Organization.
