Such lightweight airframes translate directly to fuel savings, which is a major point in <a class=\"\" title=\"View all articles about advanced here\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scienceandtechnologyresearchnews.com\/tag\/advanced\/\">advanced<\/a> composites\u2019 favor.<\/p>\n<p>But <a class=\"\" title=\"View all articles about composite here\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scienceandtechnologyresearchnews.com\/tag\/composite\/\">composite<\/a> materials are also surprisingly vulnerable: While aluminum can withstand relatively large impacts before cracking, the many layers in composites can break apart due to relatively small impacts \u2014 a drawback that is considered the material\u2019s Achilles\u2019 heel.<\/p>\n<p>Now <a class=\"\" title=\"View all articles about MIT here\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scienceandtechnologyresearchnews.com\/tag\/mit\/\">MIT<\/a> aerospace <a class=\"\" title=\"View all articles about engineers here\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scienceandtechnologyresearchnews.com\/tag\/engineers\/\">engineers<\/a> have found a way to bond composite layers in such a way that the resulting material is substantially <a class=\"\" title=\"View all articles about stronger here\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scienceandtechnologyresearchnews.com\/tag\/stronger\/\">stronger<\/a> and more resistant to damage than other advanced composites.
