{"id":28348,"date":"2016-07-27T11:46:41","date_gmt":"2016-07-27T18:46:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2016\/07\/spacex-spending-about-300-million-on-red-dragon-mission"},"modified":"2017-06-04T14:30:18","modified_gmt":"2017-06-04T21:30:18","slug":"spacex-spending-about-300-million-on-red-dragon-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2016\/07\/spacex-spending-about-300-million-on-red-dragon-mission","title":{"rendered":"SpaceX spending about $300 million on Red Dragon mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/spacex-spending-about-300-million-on-red-dragon-mission.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 NASA estimates that SpaceX is spending on the order of $300 million on its Red Dragon Mars lander mission, a down payment on the company\u2019s long-term ambitions for human Mars missions.<\/p>\n<p>At a meeting of the NASA Advisory Council\u2019s technology committee in Cleveland July 26, Jim Reuter, deputy associate administrator for programs in NASA\u2019s space technology mission directorate, provided an overview of NASA\u2019s agreement with SpaceX, announced in April, to support that company\u2019s plans for an uncrewed Mars landing mission that could launch as soon as May 2018.<\/p>\n<p>That agreement, in the form of an unfunded Space Act Agreement, does not include any exchange of funds between NASA and SpaceX. Reuter said NASA estimates it will spend approximately $32 million over four years, primarily in the form of NASA personnel providing technical support for SpaceX.
