{"id":25827,"date":"2016-05-18T09:47:18","date_gmt":"2016-05-18T16:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2016\/05\/space-exploration-will-spur-transhumanism-and-mitigate-existential-risk"},"modified":"2017-04-24T20:48:56","modified_gmt":"2017-04-25T03:48:56","slug":"space-exploration-will-spur-transhumanism-and-mitigate-existential-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2016\/05\/space-exploration-will-spur-transhumanism-and-mitigate-existential-risk","title":{"rendered":"Space exploration will spur transhumanism and mitigate existential risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/space-exploration-will-spur-transhumanism-and-mitigate-existential-risk.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Friends have been asking me to write something on space exploration and my campaign policy on it, so here it is just out on TechCrunch:<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>When people think about rocket ships and space exploration, they often imagine traveling across the Milky Way, landing on mysterious planets and even meeting alien life forms.<\/p>\n<p>In reality, humans\u2019 drive to get off Planet Earth has led to tremendous technological advances in our mundane daily lives \u2014 ones we use right here at home on terra firma.<\/p>\n<p>I recently walked through Boston\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.massport.com\/news-room\/news\/logan-airport,-jfk-library-collaborate-on-display-highlighting-innovation-in-new-england\/\">Logan International Airport<\/a>; a NASA display reminded me that GPS navigation, anti-icing systems, memory foam and LED lights were all originally created for space travel. Other inventions <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.therichest.com\/rich-list\/the-biggest\/20-shocking-nasa-inventions-we-use-everyday\/?view=all\">NASA science<\/a> has created include the pacemaker, scratch-resistant lenses and the solar panel.<\/p>\n<p>These types of advancements are one of the most important reasons I am hoping our next U.S. president will try to jump-start the American space program \u2014 both privately and publicly. Unfortunately, it doesn\u2019t appear any of them are talking about the issue. But they should be.
