Even before Facebook\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifehacker.com.au\/2016\/04\/facebooks-messenger-bots-will-change-the-way-businesses-think-about-customer-service\/\">Bots for Messenger<\/a> announcement at their developer conference, there had already been a flood of <a href=\"https:\/\/betaworks.com\/botcamp\/\">investments<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifehacker.com.au\/2016\/04\/what-we-learnt-from-microsofts-racist-and-sexist-ai-tweetbot-tay\/\">controversies<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gizmodo.com.au\/2016\/04\/facebook-chatbots-are-frustrating-and-useless\">critiques<\/a>. So I wanted to learn how to make my own bot \u2014 and put it to work!<\/p>\n<p>On the one hand, chat bots are nothing new. They have been around since the 1960s and the days of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ELIZA\">ELIZA<\/a>. But suddenly the tools to create meaningful, personalised conversations are easy enough to deploy at scale.
