It caused the brain\u2019s blood vessels to swell and constrict more strongly, which enhanced the glymphatic system\u2019s clearance of a protein that accumulates during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/topic\/alzheimers-disease\/\">Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other experiments into boosting the glymphatic system have involved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2503750-ultrasound-may-boost-survival-after-a-stroke-by-clearing-brain-debris\/\">ultrasound<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2588451-bursts-of-pink-noise-during-sleep-seem-to-help-flush-waste-from-brain\/\">pink noise<\/a> and even intermittently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/2580471-inhaling-high-dose-co2-clears-alzheimers-proteins-from-the-brain\/\">inhaling high doses of carbon dioxide<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s important to come at this from as many angles as possible, to increase the chance of this translating to the clinic and benefitting patients,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southampton.ac.uk\/people\/657v5r\/professor-chris-brown\">Christopher Brown<\/a> at the University of Southampton, UK, who wasn\u2019t involved in the latest research.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lying on a vibrating mattress while taking nitric oxide pills has shown promise for boosting the brain\u2019s waste-disposal system.
