But how are these two states connected, and where do the fibers grow? Leiden physicists Liru Feng and Louise Jawerth have discovered a counter-intuitive mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to answer an open question: What happens to protein droplets as they age?\u201d assistant professor Jawerth explains. \u201cThey look just like drops of oil in water, but they are droplets of proteins inside cells, also called <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2022-07-biomolecular-condensates-cells.html?utm_source=embeddings&utm_medium=related&utm_campaign=internal\" rel=\"related\">condensates<\/a>. Scientists have only relatively recently come to understand how they develop. Our findings on how they age\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41567-026-03415-z\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in <i>Nature Physics<\/i> today\u2014add an important piece to the puzzle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The droplets are very complex materials; they are liquid-like and can turn into solids that are glassy or fibrous. Jawerth states, \u201cFor 10 years or so, we have known that there is a link between fiber growth from these proteins and neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer\u2019s disease or ALS.
