The work, <a href=\"https:\/\/link.aps.org\/doi\/10.1103\/3b4x-77yq\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in the journal <i>Physical Review B<\/i>, offers \u201ca theoretical blueprint for the future design of superior superconductor hydrides\u201d the physicists write.<\/p>\n<p>High temperature superconductors have been a holy grail of materials sciences for decades. There has been success in finding metal clathrate superhydrides such as LaH<sub>10<\/sub>. (\u201cSuperhydrides\u201d are hydrogen-rich materials.) In 2018 the discovery of its superconductivity was announced in a <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1812.01561\" target=\"_blank\">preprint<\/a>; and half a year later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-019-1201-8\" target=\"_blank\">in the journal <i>Nature<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Its critical temperature, below which the material is superconducting (offers no resistance to an electric current, and magnetic fields are expelled from the material) was up to &minus;13\u00b0C, a record high at the time, albeit at a pressure of 188 billion pascals (GPa)\u20141.9 million times the atmosphere\u2019s surface pressure on Earth.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Scientists have confirmed the existence of a predicted room temperature superconductor, while explaining the microscopic mechanism that distinguishes it from a similar one discovered several years ago.
