{"id":24432,"date":"2016-04-08T06:48:16","date_gmt":"2016-04-08T13:48:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2016\/04\/groundbreaking-stem-cell-treatment-could-regrow-limbs-repair-bones"},"modified":"2017-06-04T20:03:02","modified_gmt":"2017-06-05T03:03:02","slug":"groundbreaking-stem-cell-treatment-could-regrow-limbs-repair-bones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2016\/04\/groundbreaking-stem-cell-treatment-could-regrow-limbs-repair-bones","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Groundbreaking\u2019 Stem Cell Treatment Could Regrow Limbs, Repair Bones"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/groundbreaking-stem-cell-treatment-could-regrow-limbs-repair-bones.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the pages of comic books and on the silver screen, superheroes like Wolverine and Deadpool have a \u201chealing factor\u201d that allows their bodies to regenerate and recover from injuries or illness at an amazing rate \u2013 but certainly nothing like that is possible in real life, right?<\/p>\n<p>Amazingly, a team of scientists led by John Pimanda, a hematologist and associate professor at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/unsw.edu.au\/\" target=\"_blank\">University of New South Wales<\/a><\/strong> in Australia, published a study in Monday\u2019s edition of the journal <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2016\/04\/01\/1518244113\" target=\"_blank\"><em>PNAS<\/em><\/a> <\/strong>reporting that they had successfully reprogrammed bone and fat cells into induced multipotent stem cells (iMS) \u2013 the first step to making such a repair system a reality.<\/p>\n<p>As they explained in a <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.unsw.edu.au\/news\/health\/medical-scientists-develop-%E2%80%98game-changing%E2%80%99-stem-cell-repair-system\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a><\/strong>, stem cell therapies using iMS cells could theoretically repair a fractured bone or fix injured spinal discs, using a technique similar to how salamanders are able to regenerate lost limbs. These treatments could radically alter the field of regenerative medicine, and perhaps most surprisingly, the authors believe they could be available in just a few years.
