Overseen by the aeronautics company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/technology\/hydrogen-power-air-taxi\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joby<\/a>, the retrofitted aircraft began its challenge in Concord, California, on September 7, ultimately traveling 3,199 miles with no assistance from its onboard human safety pilot. However, the plane didn\u2019t only fly itself once airborne. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/technology\/solar-impulse-2-aircraft-crash\/\" target=\"_blank\">Autonomous programming<\/a> directed every stage of its multi-stop journey, including taxiing, takeoffs, and landings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAutonomy has an important role to play in the future of flight,\u201d Joby founder and CEO JoeBen Bevirt <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20260918301340\/en\/Joby-Completes-First-Ever-Fully-Autonomous-Flight-Across-the-United-States\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said in a statement<\/a> on September 18. Bevird added that the technology could soon help \u201cconnect remote communities, deliver critical supplies, respond faster to disasters, support military operations, and keep pilots out of harm\u2019s way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The endeavor couldn\u2019t always follow a preset course. Instead, the autonomous plane needed to navigate numerous common air travel challenges in real-time. These included piloting through one of the nation\u2019s busiest regions above Phoenix, Arizona, as well as rerouting around thunderstorms and severe weather fronts.
