Researchers hope that a retooled crop plant\u2014one with an improved ventilation system within its leaves\u2014could thrive while avoiding drought stress by reducing \u201ccrop sweat.\u201d Thanks to next-generation imaging technology powered by Argonne National Laboratory\u2019s particle collider beamline, a team of scientists now has precise schematics of the leaf\u2019s interior and can refine approaches to breeding hardier crop plants.<\/p>\n<p>The research, published in <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/plphys\/article\/201\/3\/kiag414\/8715739\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Plant Physiology<\/i><\/a>, was led by postdoctoral researcher James Fischer in the laboratory of plant biology and crop sciences professor Andrew Leakey at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
