A malicious SIM could allow attackers to gather information about a device, interfere with its connectivity and serve as an entry point for further cyberattacks.<\/p>\n<p>Presenting their findings at the 2026 USENIX <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usenix.org\/conference\/woot26\" target=\"_blank\">WOOT Conference<\/a> on Offensive Technologies in Baltimore, University of Birmingham researchers reveal a new attack surface exposed to malicious and compromised SIMs.<\/p>\n<p>A feature known as Proactive SIM allows a SIM card to send a limited number of special commands directly to a device\u2019s modem.
