The new model uses reinforcement learning, a type of AI used in robotics, to explain\u2014and recreate\u2014the choices readers make as they move through text.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the first time we\u2019ve used AI methods to understand\u2014not just mimic\u2014how people read,\u201d says Professor Antti Oulasvirta from Aalto University. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41562-026-02534-0\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> to be published Monday, Aug. 10, in <i>Nature Human Behaviour<\/i>, researchers say the model could power smarter augmented reality (AR) displays and tailor complex texts to different readers and everyday situations.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier models learned from large data sets pairing text snippets with eye-tracking data, then mimicked human behavior, but they lacked true understanding of the content and didn\u2019t generalize well across languages or contexts, Oulasvirta explains.
