The findings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.aeg1996\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in <i>Science Advances<\/i>, support exploring the possibility of using CS18 to treat human cancer in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherapeutic resistance is a main obstacle to achieving effective and durable cancer treatments,\u201d said corresponding author Dr. Weei-Chin Lin, professor of medicine\u2014hematology and oncology\u2014and molecular and cellular biology at Baylor. \u201cWhile some therapies are effective at the beginning, many patients eventually relapse because cancer cells can activate <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2022-09-cancer-cells-treatment-induced-cell-death.html?utm_source=embeddings&utm_medium=related&utm_campaign=internal\" rel=\"related\">compensatory and convergent biological pathways<\/a> that allow them to overcome the toxic effects of therapy, promoting survival.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the current study, the researchers\u2019 goal was to develop a drug that would target a \u201cbiological switchboard\u201d\u2014topoisomerase II\u03b2-binding protein 1 (TopBP1)\u2014that controls several cancer-driving pathways at once and to determine whether this strategy could deliver durable responses and overcome resistance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine have developed a drug called CS18 that disrupts cancer cells\u2019 ability to survive therapy.
