So, yes, it would be a big deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRight now, almost 50% of the energy in transmission is just heat in copper wires,\u201d said Shomeek Mukhopadhyay. \u201cIf you can transmit electricity through wires without dissipating energy, that\u2019s a huge economic benefit. I would say it\u2019s equivalent to having thermonuclear fusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mukhopadhyay, a research scientist in Chemical &amp; Environmental Engineering, is on the third floor of the Kline Geology Laboratory.
