Invented in the early 1900s, the Haber-Bosch method requires mixing hydrogen and nitrogen gas at 400\u2013500 degrees Celsius. It\u2019s responsible for nearly 2% of global <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2023-03-barrier-low-temp-ammonia-synthesis-iron.html?utm_source=embeddings&utm_medium=related&utm_campaign=internal\" rel=\"related\">carbon dioxide emissions<\/a> and accounts for 2% of fossil energy use.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers from McMaster University have developed a process that is green and faster, generates <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2023-02-energy-efficient-conversion-nitrate-pollutants-ammonia.html?utm_source=embeddings&utm_medium=related&utm_campaign=internal\" rel=\"related\">ammonia more efficiently<\/a> from nitrate\u2014a common water pollutant\u2014and is \u201ccleaner\u201d because it uses renewable electricity rather than fossil fuel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As our world\u2019s population grows, so does the demand for ammonia\u2014a key ingredient in fertilizer.
