Accelerated versions of these processes are now being promoted as technologies to draw down carbon from the atmosphere\u2014and some are rapidly moving from concept to real-world deployments.<\/p>\n<p>Two such technologies are known as <a href=\"https:\/\/drawdown.org\/explorer\/deploy-enhanced-rock-weathering\" target=\"_blank\">enhanced weathering<\/a>, which speeds up the chemical breakdown of certain rocks, and <a href=\"https:\/\/drawdown.org\/explorer\/deploy-ocean-alkalinity-enhancement\" target=\"_blank\">ocean alkalinity enhancement<\/a>, which increases the ocean\u2019s natural ability to remove carbon dioxide from the air.<\/p>\n<p>Startups backed by tech companies including Google and Microsoft are already applying these technologies in field trials. <a href=\"https:\/\/trellis.net\/article\/tech-giants-latest-carbon-removal-bet-enhanced-rock-weathering\/\" target=\"_blank\">Investment in the sector is rising rapidly<\/a>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/inplanet.earth\/resource\/why-brazil\/\" target=\"_blank\">large-scale trials underway<\/a> and carbon credits beginning to appear on voluntary markets.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Natural geological processes have been regulating Earth\u2019s climate for millions of years.
