The work could accelerate development of safer light-emitting nanoplatelets for use in applications ranging from photodetectors to the production of fuel from solar energy. A paper describing this work <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-026-72765-2\" target=\"_blank\">appears<\/a> in Nature Communications.<\/p>\n<p>Nanoplatelets are sheet-like crystals only billionths of a meter thick; in this case, they belong to a family of <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2023-03-scientists-bandgap-tunable-2d-nanosheets-perovskite.html?utm_source=embeddings&utm_medium=related&utm_campaign=internal\" rel=\"related\">lead-free<\/a> \u201cdouble perovskites,\u201d materials whose atomic recipe can be tuned to control how they absorb and emit light.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the big challenges in developing safer optical nanomaterials is the sheer size of the material universe,\u201d says Milad Abolhasani, Alcoa Professor and University Faculty Scholar in the department of chemical and biomolecular engineering at North Carolina State University.
