Their method generated new insights that allowed the team to turn a single designed protein into two new proteins with completely different functions\u2014one of which is the most active designed enzyme to date.<\/p>\n<p>In the study, published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41557-026-02125-6\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Nature Chemistry<\/i><\/a>, the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), team for the first time combined X-ray studies of how small molecule fragments bind to designed proteins, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2023-05-method-protein-crystals-avenues-drug.html?utm_source=embeddings&utm_medium=related&utm_campaign=internal\" rel=\"related\">crystallographic fragment screening<\/a>, with a method used to design proteins, called directed evolution.
