Their analysis of nearly 600 blood samples from patients with and without these diseases revealed that neurodegenerative processes extend beyond the central nervous system, affecting various targets throughout the body.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe conducted a systemic analysis based on autoantibodies\u2014defense proteins [immunoglobulins] that mistakenly attack the body\u2019s healthy cells, tissues, or organs instead of external pathogens. In this study, we saw that, contrary to what was previously thought, these diseases don\u2019t involve an antibody attacking only a specific region of the connection between neurons [synapse], like a thief breaking in through a door. It\u2019s a systemic attack, like machine-gunning an entire house,\u201d explains J\u00falia Nakanishi Usuda, first author of the study.<\/p>\n<p>The study, <a href=\"https:\/\/linkinghub.elsevier.com\/retrieve\/pii\/S2589004226001562\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in the journal <i>iScience<\/i>, identified more than 9,000 autoantibodies from public databases. Based on the results, the researchers suggest that, rather than focusing on <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2025-11-scientists-unravel-body-biggest-mysteries.html?utm_source=embeddings&utm_medium=related&utm_campaign=internal\" rel=\"related\">isolated molecular targets<\/a>, treatment strategies for these diseases should focus on blocking the autoimmune response systemically.
