But in the quantum realm, things are not always what they seem. A <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/sciadv.aed7778\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a>, published in <i>Science Advances<\/i> and co-led by Rice University\u2019s Pengcheng Dai, found that the material cerium magnesium hexalluminate (CeMgAl<sub>11 <\/sub>O<sub>19<\/sub>) was not actually in a quantum spin liquid phase despite evidence suggesting it was.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe material had been classified as a quantum spin liquid due to two properties: observation of a continuum of states and lack of magnetic ordering,\u201d said Bin Gao, co-first author and a research scientist at Rice. \u201cBut closer observation of the material showed that the underlying cause of these observations wasn\u2019t a quantum spin liquid phase.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Magnetic materials in a quantum spin liquid phase are of great interest in the pursuit of exotic state of matter and quantum computation.
