It remains, however, unknown how the Einstein-de Haas effect operates at ultrafast timescales and atomic length scales. The authors use here time-dependent density functional theory combined with nuclear dynamics to investigate how ferromagnetic FePt reacts when irradiated by a femtosecond laser.
