Published in the global journal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-026-10103-8\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Nature<\/i><\/a>, the Sydney-based study shows the complex shapes of natural oyster reefs are not random\u2014their structure and arrangement optimize the establishment and survival of developing oysters and their protection from predators.<\/p>\n<p>Oysters are really \u201cecosystem engineers,\u201d building their own reefs made up of living oysters and the discarded shells of previous generations, explains lead author of the study, Dr. Juan Esquivel-Muelbert of Macquarie University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut reefs aren\u2019t just piles of shells or skeletons,\u201d says Dr. Esquivel-Muelbert. \u201cReefs are finely tuned 3D systems.
