The report, authored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalacademies.org\/projects\/DEPS-SSB-23-02\">Committee on a Science Strategy for the Human Exploration of Mars<\/a> that was co-chaired by Prof. Dava Newman, defines the highest-priority scientific objectives for humans on the Martian surface.<\/p>\n<p>At the top of the list: searching for evidence of past or present life. \u201cWe\u2019re searching for life on Mars,\u201d said Newman in an <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/space\/2025\/12\/in-a-major-new-report-scientists-build-rationale-for-sending-astronauts-to-mars\/\">interview with <em>Ars Technica<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThe answer to the question \u2018are we alone?\u2019 is always going to be \u2018maybe,\u2019 unless it becomes yes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report identifies 11 top science goals for initial human missions, including biosignature\/habitability experiments and water and CO\u2082 cycle studies, geology mapping, radiation monitoring, dust-storm research, and assessments of how Martian conditions affect humans and ecosystems.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On December 9, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) released a landmark report, A Science Strategy for the Human Exploration of Mars, laying out a comprehensive case for future crewed Mars missions.
