Now, researchers have found a key mechanism through which the typical age-related decline in neuron production might be slowed.<\/p>\n<p>In later life, the neural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/stem-cells\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_self\">stem cells<\/a> (NSCs) that turn into fully fledged neurons become more dormant \u2013 almost as if they\u2019re going into retirement after a long lifetime of service. As that happens, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/10000-brain-scans-reveal-why-your-memory-gets-worse-with-age\">cognitive decline creeps in<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A major reason why NSC activity fades with age is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nature08982\">wear and tear<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-telomere-discovery-could-change-our-understanding-of-aging-and-cancer\">telomeres<\/a>, the protective caps on the ends of DNA.
