Macrophages play a key role in this balance: they are cells specialized in phagocytosing, or engulfing, cells that have died due to viral infection and in repairing infection\u2014or inflammation\u2014related tissue damage.<\/p>\n<p>A study conducted at the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares Carlos III (CNIC) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/immunity\/fulltext\/S1074-7613(25)00566-7\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a> in <i>Immunity<\/i> reveals the mechanism by which a signal associated with antiviral and inflammatory responses\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2023-07-scientists-anti-viral-cytokines-blunt-immune.html?utm_source=embeddings&utm_medium=related&utm_campaign=internal\" rel=\"related\">type I interferon<\/a> (IFN-I)\u2014tunes macrophage mitochondria to enhance the clearance of tissue damage and prevent uncontrolled inflammation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/news\/2022-05-type-i-interferon-immune-rogue-viral.html?utm_source=embeddings&utm_medium=related&utm_campaign=internal\" rel=\"related\">IFN-I<\/a> is a cytokine that can promote either inflammatory or anti-inflammatory responses, depending on the disease context.
