Exactly how and why has remained something of a mystery, and a recent study goes some way towards solving it.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers led by a team from the University of Oslo in Norway wanted to see whether this memory loss affects everyone equally, or if it might be driven by individual risk factors, such as the <em>APOE<\/em> \u03b54 gene <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/just-one-gene-may-be-responsible-for-over-90-of-alzheimers-cases\">linked to<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/alzheimer-s-disease\">Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The scale of their analysis is impressive. The scientists combined data from 3,737 cognitively healthy participants, tracked over several years, including 10,343 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/magnetic-resonance-imaging\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_self\">MRI<\/a> scans and 13,460 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-name-new-type-of-memory-loss-often-mistaken-for-alzheimers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">memory assessments<\/a>, from multiple long-running studies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our episodic memory \u2013 the ability to recall past events and experiences \u2013 is known to decline as we age.
