{"id":229468,"date":"2026-01-21T01:41:34","date_gmt":"2026-01-21T07:41:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2026\/01\/a-centurys-worth-of-data-could-help-predict-future-solar-cycle-activity"},"modified":"2026-01-21T01:41:34","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T07:41:34","slug":"a-centurys-worth-of-data-could-help-predict-future-solar-cycle-activity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog\/2026\/01\/a-centurys-worth-of-data-could-help-predict-future-solar-cycle-activity","title":{"rendered":"A century\u2019s worth of data could help predict future solar cycle activity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"aligncenter blog-photo\" href=\"https:\/\/lifeboat.com\/blog.images\/a-centurys-worth-of-data-could-help-predict-future-solar-cycle-activity.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Research conducted by an international team of astronomers from Southwest Research Institute, Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences in India and the Max Planck Institute in Germany could help predict upcoming solar cycle activity.<\/p>\n<p>To enable these predictions, the team has devised a new way to look at historical data from the Kodaikanal Solar Observatory (KoSO), a field station of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) Bangalore, to reconstruct the sun\u2019s polar magnetic behavior over more than 100 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe needed to find the polar magnetic information hidden in the historical data,\u201d said SwRI scientist Dr. Bibhuti Kumar Jha, second author of a paper about these findings. \u201cTo start, we cleaned up and calibrated early data to today\u2019s standards and then correlated patterns with modern observations.
